Speckled Shortbread – 100% British Undyed Rare Breed Double Sheepskin Rug
186cm × 84cm
Who doesn’t love a quintessentially British Shortbread? There is something wonderfully homely about our newest sheepskin creation, Speckled Shortbread. At first glance it is a beautifully pale, luxurious double, then you begin to notice the little touches of warm biscuit and softly toasted brown hidden amongst the fleece, giving it far more character than a uniformly coloured rug.
Completely undyed and unbleached, every shade and marking has been created entirely by nature. The main fleece has a warm, light natural tone, with delicate shortbread shades running through it and a particularly lovely deeper speckled marking towards one end. It is just enough colour to make the rug individual without taking away from its wonderfully light appearance.
The fleece is particularly lovely too. Thick, full and beautifully luxurious, it has a wonderfully soft feel with plenty of natural depth and movement. The subtle variations in fur length and texture are all part of its character and become especially noticeable when the rug catches the light.
Measuring approximately 186cm × 84cm, Speckled Shortbread has been created from two individual British rare breed sheepskins, carefully chosen by us for the way their natural colouring, shape and fleece work together. We spend a surprising amount of time laying out and comparing skins here in the workshop before deciding on a pairing. With undyed fleeces, you cannot manufacture a match; you simply have to wait until nature provides you with the right two.
Once we are happy, the skins are carefully joined before the completed rug is stitched, trimmed, thoroughly brushed and hand-finished here in our Somerset workshop. It is slow, traditional work, with plenty done by eye and by hand rather than relying on mass-production methods.
Speckled Shortbread is also 100% British from start to finish. The sheep were bred and grazed in Britain and culled here, with the skins tanned entirely within the UK before coming to our workshop in Somerset for their final transformation.
We particularly love that little scattering of deeper colour. It is the sort of natural detail that could so easily be lost through dyeing or bleaching, yet here it becomes one of the rug’s most charming features and the inspiration behind its name.
As with all of our individually photographed undyed rare breed sheepskins, the Speckled Shortbread shown in these photographs is the exact rug you will receive.
A wonderfully sumptuous British double, full of natural warmth, texture and those lovely little toasted markings that make it completely one of a kind.
If you have any trouble at all, please do not hesitate to call us on 01458 850991 and we can help. We call these “Organic” sheepskins because they are entirely free of any bleach or dye, they have still been tanned to preserve the hide, but the colouring and patterns have been left 100% utterly as nature intended. We do our very best to take these photographs in natural light and we do not alter the colouring post production. However as much as we try to give a clear reflection on the colouring, sheepskin is a natural product and in some lights tones may appear differently, this is the beauty of buying such a unique sheepskin.
