About Sheepland – The Sheepskin Workshop in Somerset

Established in 1986

Sheepland make Sheepskin Slippers, Sheepskin Hats, Sheepskin Rugs and much more. We are a small family-run workshop, creating beautifully crafted British sheepskin products from our farmyard setting in the village of Barton St David, near Glastonbury in Somerset.

Sheepland Sheepskin About Us 03

Established in 1986, we later moved from Glastonbury to Barton St David in 1989, where we continue to design and make our sheepskin products by hand today. From our Somerset workshop, we focus on traditional British sheepskin craftsmanship, working with carefully selected natural fleeces.

Every pair of our Sheepskin Slippers is handmade in Somerset, cut, stitched and finished using time-honoured techniques. It is slow, skilled work that cannot be rushed, and something we remain deeply proud to continue. As a family workshop since 1986, we believe in doing things properly, with care, patience and respect for the materials we use.

We are a tiny team, and every order genuinely means a great deal to us. From hand-selecting the sheepskin through to the final brush and finish, each piece carries a little of our story. Many of our customers return to us time and again for the quality and feel of genuine British sheepskin.

Some of our most popular products include Sheepskin Boots, Sheepskin Mittens, Sheepskin Luxury Insoles, Sheepskin Clothing and of course our handmade Traditional Range Sheepskin Slippers. Our Sheepskin Rugs are also a firm favourite, with each rug individually selected and finished, and have even featured on the Channel 5 Cowboy Builders programme.

Sheepland Sheepskin About Us 01

Katrina, our stitching lady of over 30 years, is at the heart of our workshop. With skilled hands and years of experience, she cuts and sews sheepskin into slippers, rugs, cushions and accessories. Artisan skills like these are becoming increasingly rare, and we are proud to keep them alive here in Somerset. To watch her making your slippers, click here to take a look at our video.

Alongside our own handmade sheepskin products, we also carefully source selected items from other British makers and small craftspeople where possible, ensuring everything reflects the same quality, craftsmanship and natural materials.

Our Story

Sometimes you have a dream. Sometimes you try to make it happen, sometimes you forget all about it. Ours was never about grandeur or riches, but something much quieter, limestone walls, leaded windows and a slower pace of life.

Our Somerset workshop sits beside a cottage that is now over 200 years old. Around it, we created our workspace within incredible landscaped gardens, carefully shaping the surroundings to bring nature into everything we do. Today, the workshop is nestled among fields where cows and sheep graze, providing a gentle, constant rhythm to daily life.

Over the years, the gardens have grown alongside the workshop. Traditional borders hum with bees and butterflies, and wildlife ponds ripple with frogs, diving beetles and newts. It is a place that feels alive, and that connection to the natural world quietly influences the way we work with sheepskin every day.

There is a steadiness here that feeds into our craft. The patience of handmade work, the individuality of each sheepskin, and the understanding that no two pieces are ever quite the same. It is this that gives our sheepskin slippers, rugs and accessories their unique character.

Rooted in Somerset

Somerset has a character all of its own. Glastonbury Tor rises quietly in the distance, visible through the trees in winter, and the Isle of Avalon lingers in local legend. Stories of King Arthur, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table feel woven into the landscape.

This region has a long history of sheep farming and traditional craft, making it a natural home for working with sheepskin. The Somerset Levels once supported thriving rural industries, from farming to willow weaving, many of which still quietly continue today. Historic tanneries such as Morlands were once known for producing fine sheepskin, forming part of the heritage we are proud to continue in our own way.

There is something about Somerset that draws people in. Makers, artists and craftspeople have long settled here, inspired by the landscape and its slower pace. Visitors come to Glastonbury throughout the year, drawn by its history, its atmosphere and its sense of place.

Nearby, Wells Cathedral stands as a reminder of centuries of craftsmanship, while the surrounding streets speak to a time when things were built to last.

That same spirit lives on in small workshops like ours, where British sheepskin products are still made by hand, slowly and thoughtfully, from our family to yours.
