The name came long before the description!
As we laid this beautiful double out in our Somerset workshop fresh from our sewing machine, its warm, creamy fleece seemed to glow in the morning light. It wasn’t the crisp white of fresh ivory, nor the rich gold of honey. Instead, it sat somewhere beautifully in between, reminding us of fresh buttermilk as the sun begins to rise. Dawn Buttermilk felt like the only name that truly suited it.
With its wonderfully thick, sumptuous fleece, this is one of those sheepskin rugs that’s difficult to walk past without reaching out to touch it. The fur is beautifully dense and tactile, giving the rug an inviting softness and a lovely sense of movement. Gentle variations of warm cream and soft buttermilk tones run throughout the fleece, creating depth that only genuine undyed British sheepskin can offer.
Like every one of our double sheepskin rugs, Dawn Buttermilk began as two completely separate British rare breed fleeces. As always, we spend time laying individual sheepskins alongside one another, searching for two that share the same warmth, texture and character. Only once we’d found the right pairing, finally then, they were patiently hand-trimmed, cut, stitched and finished by hand.
Creating a British rare breed double sheepskin rug is never a hurried process. Every fleece is different, and finding two that naturally complement one another can take hours. Many beautiful sheepskins remain as singles simply because we won’t compromise on the match.
Measuring approximately 183 × 77 cm, Dawn Buttermilk is a wonderfully versatile size. Whether placed beside a bed, draped across a favourite armchair or sofa, or laid in front of the fire, it brings warmth, texture and timeless character to any room.
No dyes or bleach have been used to create these beautiful tones. Every shade has been created entirely by nature, making this rug genuinely one of a kind. The sheepskin photographed is the exact rug you’ll receive.
Before every photo is taken, we carefully hand-brush each rug here in our Somerset workshop to show its fleece at its very best. We’ll also include a complimentary Sheepland sheepskin brush with your purchase, while stocks last.

We call these “Organic” sheepskins because they are entirely free of any bleach or dye, they have still been tanned to preserve the hide, but the colouring and patterns have been left 100% utterly as nature intended. We do our very best to take these photographs in natural light and we do not alter the colouring post production. However as much as we try to give a clear reflection on the colouring, sheepskin is a natural product and in some lights tones may appear differently, this is the beauty of buying such a unique sheepskin.
