Our First Ever Rare Breed Undyed Icelandic Double Sheepskin Rug – Handcrafted in Somerset

We are incredibly excited to share something rather special with you here at Sheepland, our very first ever handcrafted Icelandic double sheepskin rug.

Handcrafted here in our small Somerset workshop, this beautiful Ivory Frost double has been carefully hand matched, stitched and finished entirely by hand using two exquisite rare breed Icelandic sheepskins. Although we have been making sheepskin rugs here in Somerset since 1986, this marks the very first time we have ever created a genuine Icelandic double, making this piece particularly meaningful to us.

Creating double sheepskin rugs properly is a surprisingly time consuming process. Each fleece must be individually laid out alongside many others to find skins that naturally sit together in tone, texture, shape and flow. With Icelandic fleeces being so wonderfully wild, long and organic in appearance, matching them beautifully is even more difficult than usual. We spent a long time pairing these particular skins together to create a rug that feels balanced whilst still retaining all of the natural movement and character that makes Icelandic sheepskin so special.

The overall colouring is a beautiful soft natural ivory, with delicate creamy undertones running throughout the fleece. The incredibly long, flowing fur gives the rug an almost cloud like appearance, creating a luxurious yet understated feel that instantly softens a room. These fleeces are entirely natural and completely undyed, meaning every rug carries its own individual character and subtle variation exactly as nature intended.

Icelandic sheep are one of the oldest and purest breeds in the world, originally brought to Iceland by Viking settlers over a thousand years ago. Isolated for centuries, the breed developed thick dual coated fleeces to survive harsh Nordic climates, resulting in those wonderfully silky outer fibres alongside a soft insulating underlayer beneath. The texture truly begs to be touched.

Unlike mass produced rugs, these sheepskins are entirely free from bleach or dye, allowing all of the natural beauty within the fleece to remain untouched. In cooler light the rug appears a crisp soft ivory, whilst warmer natural light brings out gentle creamy tones hidden within the fur. These subtle shifts are all part of the beauty of genuine natural sheepskin.

Measuring approximately 194 cm × 80 cm including the fur, this double sheepskin rug makes a stunning statement piece draped over a chair, laid beside the bed, placed in front of a fire or styled across a bench or window seat. The fleece is beautifully tactile under hand whilst remaining naturally breathable and temperature regulating, helping to keep you cosy in winter yet comfortable throughout the warmer months too.
