100% British Undyed Rare Breed Sheepskin in Caramel Whisper - Handmade in Somerset

Every so often, two individual sheepskins seem as though they were simply meant to belong together, and Caramel Whisper is one of those lovely pairings.

Completely undyed and unbleached, this beautiful British double has a wonderfully pale natural fleece, delicately touched with the softest caramel markings. The colour isn’t bold or overpowering. Instead, little hints of warm caramel appear here and there through the fleece and around the edges, almost as though they’ve been lightly brushed across the wool by nature. It was this subtle colouring that gave Caramel Whisper its name.

The fleece itself is beautifully soft, full and tactile, with all the little changes in texture and tone that we love about genuine undyed sheepskin. Run your hand through the wool and you’ll find natural movement and variation rather than the uniformity of something mass-produced. It’s exactly these tiny imperfections and differences that give a rare breed rug its character.

Measuring approximately 180cm × 75cm, Caramel Whisper began life in our workshop as two completely separate British sheepskins. Creating one of our doubles isn’t simply a matter of choosing two skins of roughly the same colour and stitching them together. We lay out different fleeces, compare their colouring, wool length, texture, shape and character, and keep trying combinations until we find a pairing that feels right.

Once we’ve found it, the two skins are carefully joined before the finished rug is trimmed, brushed and hand-finished here in our little Somerset workshop. It is a wonderfully traditional and rather time-consuming way of working, but one we wouldn’t want to lose.

Caramel Whisper is also 100% British from start to finish. The sheep were bred and grazed here in Britain and culled in Britain, with the skins tanned entirely within the UK before coming to us in Somerset for their final transformation. From the sheep and the tanning through to the matching, stitching and finishing, this really is a British sheepskin through and through.

There are no dyes and no bleach creating the beautiful shades you see. Those tiny caramel touches, the variations in the pale fleece and every little natural marking are simply how the wool grew, making this a rug that could never be replicated exactly.

Before being photographed, we give the finished rug a thorough brush by hand to lift and settle the fleece, then measure it and give it its own individual identity. The Caramel Whisper you see in these photographs is the exact Caramel Whisper that will arrive at your door.
