Britain’s Most Beautiful Rare & Heritage Breed Sheepskins

When people think of a sheepskin rug, they often imagine a simple ivory fleece. But some of the world’s most beautiful sheepskins come from rare and traditional sheep breeds, each with its own remarkable history, distinctive appearance and unique character. Here at Sheepland, we’ve always been passionate about celebrating these extraordinary fleeces. Rather than dyeing them, we let nature do the talking, showcasing the incredible colours, markings and textures that have developed over centuries of selective breeding. These breeds are becoming increasingly difficult to source in quantity, making every rug we produce feel that little bit more special.

Why We Love Undyed Rare Breed Sheepskins

No two sheep are ever identical.

Unlike dyed sheepskins, undyed rare breed sheepskins celebrate everything nature intended – from dramatic black markings to warm caramel tips, silver greys and creamy ivories. Every rug tells its own story, making each one completely unique.

Undyed Icelandic Sheepskins

The Icelandic sheep is one of the oldest and purest sheep breeds in the world, descended from sheep brought to Iceland by Viking settlers over 1,000 years ago. Their long outer fibres and soft undercoat create a wonderfully wild, luxurious fleece in shades including ivory, cream, silver grey, brown and striking black and white.

Fun fact: Icelandic sheep naturally produce a double-coated fleece, helping them thrive in harsh climates.

Undyed Jacob Sheepskins

Jacob sheep are famous for their striking dark brown and white markings, making every fleece unique.

Fun fact: Many naturally grow between two and six horns, making them one of Britain’s most distinctive breeds.

Undyed Herdwick Sheepskins

Native to the Lake District, Herdwick sheep are renowned for their resilience and beautiful silver-grey fleeces.

Fun fact: Herdwick sheep learn their grazing area through a behaviour called ‘hefting’, allowing them to roam without fences.

Creating Our Handmade Double Sheepskins

Finding two rare breed sheepskins that naturally match in colour, fleece length and character can take weeks or even months.

Every pair is carefully selected before being skilfully sewn together in our Somerset workshop. The process cannot be rushed, which is why our rare breed doubles are produced in such small numbers.

Always Looking for Something Different

We’re always searching for unusual and specialist breeds with exceptional natural colours and markings. Sometimes we may only receive a handful of skins, while others can take many months to source in sufficient quantities.

That rarity is what makes them so special.

Naturally Beautiful, Completely Unique

Whether it’s the flowing luxury of an Icelandic fleece, the striking markings of a Jacob or the rugged character of a Herdwick, every sheepskin tells its own story.

If you find one you love, don’t wait too long—it may be the only one we’ll ever have!
