Polden Cream Speckled – British Undyed Double Sheepskin Rug

Some sheepskins quietly stand out the moment you see them. Sometimes it is the softness of the wool, sometimes the colour, and occasionally it is the natural markings that give a rug its own unmistakable character. This beautiful double sheepskin is one of those pieces. We have nicknamed this rug Polden Cream Speckled, inspired by the gentle natural speckles that appear through the fleece towards the ends and by the Polden Hills that stretch across the Somerset landscape not far from our workshop. Much like the rolling tones of those hills, the fleece carries subtle variation through the wool, with a warm creamy base colour lifted by soft natural speckling towards the ends.
There are no dyes or added colouring, only the authentic shades created by nature itself. The result is a rug full of depth and character, where the tones move gently through the fleece and give the wool a wonderfully organic appearance.
Creating a double rug like this is never quick or simple, it is a careful and tricky process, one which we have been doing since 1986. On visits to our trusted South West tannery we spend hours working through stacks of British sheepskins, carefully selecting only a handful with the softness, density and natural colouring we look for. From there the real work begins, each double rug is created by hand matching two individual fleeces so that the wool flows naturally and the tones sit beautifully together. Every stage of its journey is proudly British. The sheep are bred and raised on UK pasture, the skins are processed and tanned in the South West, and they then arrive here at Sheepland, our small family workshop in the Somerset countryside near Glastonbury. It is here that we hand select, match, stitch and finish each rug ourselves, continuing the same craft we have practised since 1986.
When the right match comes together it almost feels as though the two skins were always meant to be one rug.
This rug measures approximately 185 cm × 70 cm and has a lovely natural drape with that unmistakable cloud soft texture that makes genuine British sheepskin so loved, not to mention it is wonderfully versatile in the home. Draped across a chair it brings instant warmth and texture, beside a bed it offers the softest start to the morning, and placed in front of a fire the natural cream tones catch the light beautifully.
To help keep the fleece looking its best we include a complimentary sheepskin brush with every rug. A gentle brush from time to time will keep the wool soft, lofty and beautiful for years to come.
